Looking for love in all the wrong places?  Perhaps it’s not about the destination but the journey.  Your next taxi ride may change your life (or evening) as New York City implements its Group Ride Taxi-sharing program.  Similar to a bus route, yellow cabs will allow up to four passengers to pay a flat fare of $3-$4 from a designated pickup location and “hop off” anywhere along the route.

The first three stands and routes:

Pick up location
Route End Point
Fare per person
West 57th Street/ 8th Ave
57th Street to Park Ave/ 42nd Street
$3.00
East 72nd Street/ 3rd Ave
Park Ave/ 42nd Street
$4.00
West 72nd Street/ Columbus Ave
Park Ave/ 42nd Street
$4.00

For now, the Group Ride program will only operate during morning rush hour, weekdays between 6am and 10am.

According to NY Taxi and Limousine Commissioner Matthew W. Daus, “Group rides are a smart policy.  It increases taxi capacity during high-demand hours.  It costs passengers less and earns drivers more… Everyone wins.”

So fasten your seatbelt, your morning commute might just lead to a bumpy night.
